week 1: welcome everything + earth-body
Introductions & intentions
Layout of the whole workshop
Homework (optional): choose a time and a sit down to write. Before you write, drop into your body. See what feeling state you are in. Are you excited? Tired? Feverish? Angry? Joyful? Sad? Relaxed? Then write for 10 minutes, writing from a place in your body that you particular experience this feeling state - your belly, your feet, your arms, your chest.
The Guest House, by Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks
This being human is a guest-house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you
out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
The Way It Is, by William Stafford
There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.
