Hormone cycle for people with ovaries who menstruate

Intention

Menstrual Phase

The intention phase is associated with menstruation, as progesterone decreases and the uterine lining sheds, estrogen peaks and drops, and your body prepares for ovulation. This is a time when dreams can be particularly visionary and intuition is strong.

Preparation

Follicular Phase

The preparation phase is associated with the follicular phase, when the ovaries prepare to release an egg. Many egg follicles swell, and estrogen increases to thicken the uterine lining in preparation for implantation.

Action

Ovulation

The action phase is associated with the ovulation phase, when one follicle swells and bursts, releasing an egg from the ovary. Luteinizing Hormone peaks. Estrogen continues to increase to thicken the uterine lining, and immune cells grow in the uterus. Testosterone also increases, and then decreases right before ovulation.

Follow Through

Luteal Phase

The follow through phase is associated with the luteal phase, when progesterone increases, maintaining the uterine lining. Towards the end of this phase, if the egg has not been fertilized, testosterone increases and progesterone production halts, initiating menstruation.

Integration

Menstrual phase

The integration phase is associated with the return to menstruation, as progesterone decreases and the uterine lining sheds, estrogen peaks and drops, and your body prepares for ovulation.

Everyone's body is different, every body has unique hormone levels.

If you have ovaries and take herbs and/or synthetic hormones to increase progesterone or testosterone, you may still experience this cycle in a more subtle energetic way. The intention phase may be aligned with the time midway between testosterone or progesterone doses. In the action phase your estrogen levels will be lower, but you may still experience this cycle in a more subtle energetic way, as well as the surge in testosterone.

If you have testes and you take estrogen, notice any subtle shifts you feel throughout the cycle of each estrogen dose.
